Year of the Pig

Updated: Apr 19, 2019

It's year of the Pig! Great year ahead! 2019 is the year of the Earth Pig, bringing lots of wealth luck for everyone!

Recent years include: 1947, 1959, 1971, 1983, 1995 or 2007.

Pigs have a beautiful personality and are blessed with good fortune in life.

Remember, Chinese new year begins in February, so if you have a January birthday, you will be the zodiac for the year before. i.e my birthday is January 1978, so I am a snake not a horse. Some say, the further through the year you are, the stronger the qualities of the animal.

Check the list of exact CNY dates at the end of this post.

Each zodiac sign has 'allies' and 'secret friends' who are particularly powerful pillars of support. It is thought that by carrying amulets or having images of them in certain parts of your home/ office, your positive flow of energy (chi) will be empowered.

Lucky Flowers

Lucky flowers for the Pig are hydrangeas and daisies.

Personality

In Chinese culture, pigs are the symbol of wealth. Loyal and loving animals, the pig is realistic and hard working enjoying the finer things in life. Pigs might not stand out in a crowd. But they are very realistic. Others may be all talk and no action. Pigs are the opposite.

They love entertainment and will occasionally treat themselves. Material things motivate them to work hard. Being able to hold solid objects in their hands gives them security.

They are energetic and are always enthusiastic, even for boring jobs, but will take positions of power and status.

Chinese Legend of the Pig

The Pig is the twelfth of all zodiac animals. According to one myth, the Jade Emperor said the order would be decided by the order in which they arrived to his party. Pig was late because he overslept. Another story says that a wolf destroyed his house. He had to rebuild his home before he could set off. When he arrived, he was the last one and could only take twelfth place.

Time of Day

The Pig is associated with the Earthly Branch (地支—dì zhī) hài (亥), and the hours 9–11 in the night.

In terms of yin and yang (阴阳—yīn yáng), the Pig is yin (feminine energy).
