Remember, Chinese new year begins in February, so if you have a January birthday, you will be the zodiac for the year before. i.e my birthday is January 1978, so I am a snake not a horse. Some say, the further through the year you are, the stronger the qualities of the animal.

Check the list of exact CNY dates at the end of this post.

Each zodiac sign has 'allies' and 'secret friends' who are particularly powerful pillars of support. It is thought that by carrying amulets or having images of them in certain parts of your home/ office, your positive flow of energy (chi) will be empowered.

Chinese Legend of the Dog

The Dog is the eleventh of all zodiac animals. Chinese legend has it, the Jade Emperor said the order would be decided by the order in which they arrived to his party. Monkey, Rooster and Dog were in another country, helping a god defeat evil spirits. Because they arrived at the same time, the Jade Emperor went by the order they met the god in the other country. The Dog became eleventh.

Dog is man's best friend who can understand the human's spirit and obey its master, regardless of position or wealth. The Chinese regard it as an auspicious animal. If a dog happens to come to a house, it symbolizes the coming of fortune. The invincible God Erlang in Chinese legend used a loyal wolfhound to help him capture monsters.

Time of the day

The Dog is also associated with the Earthly Branch (地支—dì zhī) xū (戌), and the hours 7–9 in the evening.

In the terms of yin and yang (阴阳—yīn yáng), the Dog is yang (masculine energy).
